If you’re in the market for an iPod speaker with an FM radio, there is no sense in getting one with a regular old FM radio - you might as well get one with HD radio. Nokia 7100 Supernova Mobile Review

The Nokia 7100 Supernova Mobile won't provoke any exploding fireballs of excitement, but it covers the basic features and won't break the bank. This shiny, simple slider phone is available on pay as you go with T-Mobile for around £70.

Looking shiny
The 7100 looks good for such an inexpensive phone, with a glossy finish and brightly-coloured trim that might appeal to the fashion-conscious teen with some pocket money to spend. Our model was billed as red, but it's as pink as a bag of candyfloss in a ballerina costume.

The slide mechanism is springy and, although the back cover feels rather flimsy, the phone feels solidly put-together. The keypad buttons are easy to press, giving a satisfying click, and they're well spaced-out and relatively large. The five-way function button is as big as a 5p coin, which makes the 7100 a good choice for meaty-fingered users.

The 7100 Mobile feels well-built, with relatively large buttons and a springy slide mechanism

The 7100 Mobile also has a dedicated camera button on the side, but there's an almost identical button shape on the opposite side that doesn't do anything. It reminds us of the blank spaces on car dashboards where the manufacturers have left room for more features in a higher-end model. It could also be confusing when you're trying to launch the camera quickly.

Through a glass darkly
We didn't think much of the 7100 Mobile's 1.3-megapixel camera,
which takes grey and dingy photos, even in the brightly-lit CNET UK towers. Images are noisy, and the camera's too sluggish to take snapshots of anything that moves faster than a marble statue. Over 2 seconds of shutter lag meant that, by the time the camera captured a photo, our subject had moved on and we'd lost interest in them anyway.

The 7100 Mobile's video-capture capability is even worse, delivering jerky, pixellated playback that's barely good enough to be featured in a road-safety campaign. Combine that with a small, 51mm (2-inch) screen and you won't be creating any Oscar-worthy home videos with this phone.

Soft rock
The 7100 Mobile has a 2.5mm headphone jack, and no adaptor, so we weren't able to test its music player with high-quality headphones. It comes with a pair of very basic, plastic earbuds, and it also supports stereo Bluetooth, but this isn't a phone for music lovers -- with a piddling 4MB of on-board memory, it can only hold a tiny slice of our MP3 collection.

CES 2009 wrap-up: Cell phones and smartphones

Though cell phones are just a small part of CES, the category made a big splash at this year's show with the first cell phone to win CNET's Best of CES award. But the Palm Pre was not the only device in Las Vegas; new devices also debuted from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and LG, to name a few. In the smartphone category, the obvious star was the Palm Pre, which scored a hat trick by winning not only the aforementioned Best of CES award, but also the Best of CES award in the cell phone category and the People's Voice Award. The Pre restored a bit of faith in Palm and more importantly, pushed the capabilities of a smartphone. The Pre promises to offer true multi-tasking on a phone and dazzles with its unique user interface, design, and features. In addition, the Palm Web OS and App Store will only expand the Pre's (as well as future Palm Web OS devices) uses and capabilities. By raising the bar, Palm has certainly sent a message to its competitors and we suspect they'll step up and respond, which is always good for us since it will bring more innovation. While the Pre might have grabbed much of the CES spotlight, it wasn't the only smartphone to debut at the show. T-Mobile announced the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 and T-Mobile Shadow, while HTC introduced its HTC S743 smartphone. Nokia also announced that it will bring a U.S. version of the Nokia E63 to market in the coming weeks, and we finally got some hands-on time with the Nokia N97. Looks like 2009 is shaping up to be another action-packed year for the smartphone space. Motorola earned a Best of CES nomination with its Surf A3100 smartphone. The touch-screen device offers multimedia features in an eye catching design. And better yet, it puts a nifty and user-friendly spin on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating.

Samsung’s Alias 2 Lands at Verizon Wireless Phone

Today Samsung and Verizon Wireless announced the Alias 2. The Alias 2 (U750) is a second take on the original messaging phone that brings with it a major revision to the QWERTY keyboard. It retains the dual-hinge, but uses e-ink for the keyboard rather than traditional buttons. When the Alias 2 is opened like a traditional clamshell, the e-ink shows a regular numeric dialpad. When it is opened sideways, the e-ink transforms into a full QWERTY keyboard like in computer and laptops. The Alias 2 also has a 2 megapixel camera with video capture, Bluetooth with A2DP support, visual voicemail, and support for 16GB microSD cards. The Alias 2 is available today for $80 after rebates with new agreement.

Sony Ericsson C905 Mobile Review

The C905 Mobile is an amazing phone, raising the bar in camera phone capabilities, with an 8.1 megapixel camera with a powerful xenon flash. In our opinion this is the best camera phone currently available. It's also equipped with GPS satnav, a media player, FM radio with RDS, 3G HSDPA with video calling, WiFi, and up to 8 GB of memory. However, it isn't the perfect phone: the tricky keypad, poor battery life, lack of video calling and tendency for the speaker to fail mean that it can't have 5 stars.

Features of the Sony Ericsson C905 Mobile include:

  • 8.1 megapixel camera with xenon flash technology, face detection autofocus, smart contrast, image stabiliser, red-eye reduction and 16x digital zoom
  • Video camera (30 frames / second) with video stabiliser, video light and video calling
  • Display: TFT, 262,144-colour, 240 x 320 pixels (2.4 inches)
  • Media player
  • FM radio with RDS

  • Assisted GPS with Google Maps
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
  • 3D Java games
  • Animated wallpaper
  • Personal organiser functions
  • Flight mode
  • Vibration alert
  • Memory: 160 Mbytes plus support for Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) (up to 8GB)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB mass storage, WiFi, DLNA support, modem
  • Internet: Web browser, RSS feeds, blogging, HSDPA (3.6 Mbps)
  • Quadband (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) plus 3G (UMTS 2100) HSDPA
  • Size: 104 x 49 x 18 mm

Samsung i8510 INNOV8

The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 Mobile is a high end, high technology handset. Running on the Symbian S60 platform, the Samsung i8510 INNOV8 Mobile is indeed an innovation. Samsung have really worked hard over the past couple of years and perhaps this Mobile is the culmination of all their hard work.

Once the main selling point for Finland’s finnest, Nokia; Samsung have gotten in on the Symbian action. Although, it is worth pointing out that this is not Samsung’s first Symbian S60 device, they way they have positioned it in terms of price and specs, it could well be one of their most successful.

There are main attractive features to the Samsung i8510 INNOV8 Mobile, but primarily it has to be the 8 MP camera. This gives you great images, as sharp as you would demand from an 8 MP camera, while displaying them on the screen makes them really stand out because of the TFT 16m colour screen. The screen itself is 240 x 320 pixels, 2.8 inches, which is fairly big and effective.

The Mobiles is also a slide phone. Pushing it up reveals the numeric keypad. It measures 106.5 x 53.9 x 17.2 mm. This makes it slightly more compact as compaired to the Nokia N96.

Samsung i8510 INNOV8 Mobile Specs

Latest iPod video rumors: 4-inch display

It was too good to be true. Just when we thought we might actually have a day free from Apple rumors (after all, doesn't Microsoft deserve to have the rumor mill to itself for at least a little while?), ThinkSecret has hit us with word that the "true" video iPod is still coming, and that it will have a 4-inch display, rather than the 3.5-inch one that was claimed in earlier rumors. ThinkSecret also reports that this super techology video iPod is on target for a March or April release, pending content deals with studios (which we assume will come through, given that Steve Jobs basically owns Disney now). Of course, even if the video unit is delayed, we assume Stevie will still schedule another big press conference sometime in the next few weeks. After all, Apple has yet to announce the Intel-powered eMac and the pleather case for the shuffle.

The USB Hub with a built-in flashlight, gadget

I keep going through all the dozens of reasons that this could be useful, but then I end up canceling them out for one reason or another. I thought it might be great to sit at your computer and then the flashlight would be useful for when you’re playing with cords at the back of your computer. However, I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t feel my way around it to figure things out. I’m sure that someone could find a use for this flashlight meets USB hub though.

If you are female and for some reason like to carry around a hub with you, then you’d always have a flashlight handy for various tasks. The hub conveniently tucks into the hub itself when it’s not in use. You can hold it as either a flashlight, or it flips open to be used as a reading light. The LED light is rechargeable, so it doesn’t have to be plugged in to work. The hub itself has a total of 3 USB ports. You can purchase it for $14 from Gadget4all.

Tata Motors unveils the People’s Car

A comfortable, safe, all-weather car, high on fuel efficiency & low on emissions

Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, today unveiled the Tata ‘NANO’, the People’s Car from Tata Motors that India and the world have been looking forward to. A development, which signifies a first for the global automobile industry, the People’s Car brings the comfort and safety of a car within the reach of thousands of families. The People’s Car will be launched in India later in 2008.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said, “I observed families riding on two-wheelers – the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family. Tata Motors’ engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal. Today, we indeed have a People’s Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions. We are happy to present the People’s Car to India and we hope it brings the joy, pride and utility of owning a car to many families who need personal mobility.”

Stylish, comfortable
The People’s Car, designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy.

Yet with a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas. Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars.

When launched, the car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual’s preferences.

Fuel-efficient engine
The People’s Car has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

Meets all safety requirements
The People’s Car’s safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

Environment-friendly

The People’s Car’s tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today. The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD (Not yet released)

The latest Samsung i8910 Omnia HD mobile phone will be high on many a shopping list in 2009.

Unlike it's Windows based predecessor the Samsung i900 Omnia the new Omnia HD is a symbian based smartphone & has further software enhancements from Samsung with their superb TouchWiz interface. With haptic touch sensitive technology, you'll be swiping, dragging & dropping in no time at all - Cool Stuff Indeed !

The most notable feature of the i8910 though is the HUGE display measuring 3.7 inches. This makes the Omnia HD the perfect SatNav companion & coupled with the fantastic 8Mp camera, the perfect photography tool too.

The Omnia HD has a dual LED flash, autofocus, face detection, smile detection, Blinkshot, photo editor and also a "panorama shot" feature. Pictures and video look absolutely perfect thanks to the incredibly large 3.7 " OLED display which again has haptic feedback for total "feel". A secondary camera is also featured for 3G videocalls.

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD has Xtragps for total guidance & global positioning. This works beautifully alongside the large touchscreen display. Samsung say that their maps are so detailed that the i8910 can literally take you from "door to door" unlike some less competent manufacturers ! The combination of the touchscreen, the clarity of the display & it's accuracy make the Omnia HD a serious alternative to a stand-alone SatNav device.

Entertainment is taken care of via an FM radio, advanced gaming, MP3 player and superb DivX/XviD/WMV/MP4 player which really brings the action to life on such a large display.

N97 Processor Details Revealed

The N97 will soon be upon us and many people are itching to find out all they can about it. Well the good news is that details of the processor have become available, the bad news is that it may disappoint some. For the N97 Nokia have decided to use a single ARM 11 processor with a clock speed of 434 MHz. This does seem a bit low and some were expecting to see a processor packing a bit more punch, something in the 600 MHz region say, which would be comparable with other handsets announced so far this year or even with the E55. It’s also worth noting that the processor Nokia have chosen doesn’t give the N97 that much more power than it’s other touchscreen handset, the 5800, which runs at 369 MHz. Of course clock speed isn’t the full story with a handset and we can expect other strategies for ensuring the handset runs smoothly e.g. software optimisation.
